Myofascial Release

The fascia is a specialized system of the body that has an appearance similar to a spider’s web or wool sweater.  It is very densely woven and lines and covers every structure inside our bodies.  It is actually one continuous structure that exists from head to foot without interruption.

Fascia can develop restrictions through trauma, inflammation, scarring and poor posture over time.  It then becomes solidified, shortened down and produces excessive pressure on pain-sensitive structures which can create symptoms.

Myofascial Release is a form of bodywork that seeks to rebalance the body by releasing tension in the fascia. It involves releasing and unwinding the fascia (connective tissue) that surrounds each muscle and interconnects all of the other internal parts of the body. This tissue layer, which connects every muscle, tendon, ligament, bone, and organ in our bodies, can store memories of physical trauma. Releasing these restrictions allows us to discharge recurring emotional as well as physical pain.

A skilled MFR therapist can see and feel where these fascial restrictions are located and can ease any restrictions that they feel.  Myofascial Release has helped many people overcome long term chronic pain problems and improve their ability to function.

During a Myofascial Release treatment session, the therapist needs to have “skin to skin” contact to provide the friction interface needed to release the fascia effectively. No oils or lotions are used.  Myofascial Release treatment sessions are often extremely relaxing. There may or may not be conversation with the therapist, however the therapist encourages the patient to be present and aware of sensations within their body. Feedback from the patient to the therapist regarding what they are feeling helps the therapist to be as effective as possible.

Diana has received training and practical experience in Myofascial Release from John F. Barnes and uses the John F. Barnes techniques in her treatments.
